Jun 28th – Saturday Night - “Showdown in Flower Town” – Joe Beard vs Roy Carrier – Presented by Zydeco Junky Productions (that’s me Bruce H)
Witness two soul brothers, blues and zydeco greats, duke joint it out
A unique musical and dance experience bringing together two greats in their respective genres, Joe Beard (Blues) and Roy Carrier (Zydeco). In the grand spirit of charged double bills such as the Thrilla in Manila (Ali vs Frazier) and the Rumble in the Jungle (Ali vs Foreman), Rochester is going to be host of what will become a legendary bout: Beard vs Carrier. The two soul brothers, blues and zydeco masters are going duke joint it out, trade licks, and shake everybody down. They gunna bop ‘til everybody drops!!!!!!
Why Beard vs Carrier? Two musicians with remarkably parallel lives whose meandering lines have crossed. Both grew up in rural southern states straddling the vast Mississippi River, Joe Beard in Ashland, MS and Roy Carrier in Church Point LA. Both from large share cropper families, Beard – 12 kids, Carrier – 10 kids, steeped in cultures that lived and breathed music as much a staple as food and water, surrounded by family and guests who would rock the house-parties deep into the night. The two eventually picked up instruments - Joe-guitar, Roy-accordion – and in their adult lives in the after hours, after long days of labor, the two started playing out for the love of the music, and eventually in their own worlds became professional musicians, in time touring both in US and Europe. Their love of music was passed on to their children who have similarly become touring musicians – Joe Beard’s son Chris, Roy Carrier’s sons Chubby Carrier and Dikki Du (Troy) Carrier. Clearly soulful music is in their blood.
However, one thing in particular helped forge the soul bond between the two, their love of the Blues. While Carrier clearly plays Zydeco, it is heavily at the blues end of the Zydeco spectrum. So when the two were introduced to each other at a Mardi Gras Party that featured Roy Carrier and the Night Rockers, the connection was instantaneous and deep. Joe sat in with Roy’s band and there was no going back. Ever since then both Joe and Roy have talked of getting together again and making some real music happen. Now’s the time, at the “Showdown in Flower Town” taking place Saturday June 28th at the Harmony House in Webster
